Continuation of this.
I f*cking quit…
So, I removed the formerly CC-BY track and put another one in it’s place.
And…
So thanks to the matter I mentioned on my previous post, I ended up having to change the music and re-render the video (2 years since the last render)
In those 2 years I changed graphic card 2 times, started with a 8500GT, then I had an HD3850 temporarily, then back to the 8500GT and finally a year ago changed to an HD7750.
With the changes, gone was CUDA acceleration, but in it’s place I had OpenCL.
So, sometime ago I alluded to the fact that I did “no budget” short films with a friend or two to waste free time.
I also whined like hell about youtube’s copyright ‘system’
And today, simply by chance I logged in into the youtube account I use for the shorts.
So, I was roaming around the interwebs and came across this game engine (to be honest, I believe I came across it back when I first found Unity too).
Looked at the price for the “Pro” version and it was…0€, the right price for my wallet.
It also had real time shadows (which I really wanted to play around with).
So I ‘bought’ it!
My impressions?
Is it?
Unity UI?
Really?
2 major versions and (at least) 4 years later?
When I first used Unity on version 2.6.1 they were already talking about it, everyone thought it would come in v3, nope…OK, v4 then? Nope.
Seems like it’ll be there on 5 (OK…4 and half plus a tenth), not too bad.
Well…
I know I’ll never finish a game, but I’m going to install the beta just to check it out.
PS: I haven’t followed Unity for a while (haven’t installed any of the 4.x versions and only installed 3.0 and maybe the next two versions). But was looking at the Unity 5 features and selling points and it seems they – finally – went SpeedTree. Not that I will benefit from it (I finally accepted the reality that I don’t have the knowledge nor the talent needed to make a game). Also it seems to be subscription only at USD$19.99/month (why don’t they just round it to USD$20?)
(this post was written in July/August, which means some three months ago. I still haven’t worked much on the project. I’m mostly posting to show I’m still alive)
…it doesn’t mean I don’t still have fun coming up with new ones.
Although I can’t help but feel I’m getting old and so should know better than to come up with all those projects that I don’t intend to ever finish.
Back to 2003/2004, when I first got in my head that I would one day make a video game, at the time I had a friend in school (he’s my game development partner if there ever was one, lol) who was quite the SNES JRPG fanatic (Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Zelda, Breath of Fire; you know, the classics). Me, on the other hand, while I liked RPGs I hadn’t played many from the SNES days.
This is going to be a bit of a reminiscent, geeky post, so feel free to ignore it.
Again here I come with my favourite new toy, webm videos.
This time from “Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san Z”
Remember kids, don’t just copy and paste code/wordpress tags from somewhere, more often than not it has typos and/or replaced characters.
Case in point: <!–nextpage–>
Spent over 30 minutes around the darn thing yesterday, until I just said “Fuck it!”, just to figure out that, I’ll hazard a guess, the post editor of the website I copied the darn tag from had replaced characters…by other characters that (if you’re distracted, not really thinking about it or near-sighted) look exactly the same.
So, sometime ago I posted about how I was playing around with Rosetta stone to expand my Japanese knowledge. (knowledge…right…)
I dropped it for a while, but today, since I had nothing better to do, I double clicked it and had another go at it.
And BAM! just stumbled into a great example of the whole “it might be good for a baby, but I’m not a baby”.
Well, something I rarely do, bring up real world news and comment them. (mostly because it might take me onto discussing my world view and “I don’t wanna!!!”)
If you don’t want to read my opinion, don’t continue.
