Typical…

So, I spend a few days working on a 3d model of one of the buildings – with the interior and all that shit – was starting to texture it when my brain tells me: “Dude…there’s something wrong with the layout of the apartments.”, I answer: “Nah, nothing wrong with them, see, there’s the bedroom, the living room, the bathroom and the kitch…wait…where’s the kitchen?”.

It’s not that the kitchen was a fundamental part for the gameplay, it’s just that I completely forgot to include it since the initial layout sketches. The bathroom isn’t essential either and I didn’t forget it.

Meh, back to the beginning.

Again, because I can.

Lately, I’ve been in the mood to read manga and watch anime.

So I chose 1 manga and 1 anime that sounded good and watched/read.

And damn, did I make good choices…

The manga was “20th Century Boys” and “21st Century Boys”, one warning…the ending sucks and you end up never clearly understanding what led to the whole thing.

The anime was “Monster”, pretty nice again a very…’meh’ ending. Got a bit confused about some stuff, but there’s one thing on that anime that I’m sure of: Communism is evil.

So if you have a few hours/days to waste, I would recommend you to try one of those two.

That makes me remember that I have “Death Note” – the anime – on ‘hold’ for…around 3 years.

For now…

All I have to say is: Sniper game thingy development is on hold for now. Reason, waiting for Unity 3, that and I’m getting bored and I’m trying to learn how to use Blender (even on 2.5x the GUI is…evil looking, yet, I’m perfectly fine using 3ds max)

Meanwhile, I’ve nearly finished the 3d model of one of the buildings – yes, ONE of the buildings – does that mean I work slowly? Probably, but it mostly means I rarely plan stuff before I start.

On the bright side, I’m very ‘modular’ friendly, so my building is just that, the building, everything else – the doors, windows, furniture inside the apartments – will be different objects, which means that every single 3D model can be re-used either on this project or on a future one. Some people would say that’s lazy and I agree, but it works most of the time.

A New Idea

Yep, I had an idea for another project.

Now the surprising fact is…it wasn’t a game.

It began when I thought about making a blog just to whine – instead of whining in here – then I suddenly had the idea of writing a storyline that would be shown to the reader as blog posts. Honestly, the less I write about it the bigger the chance of it having success is.

So this is a meaningless post, right? Since I won’t share more details about such project…

No, this is – again – one of those ‘I share random stuff’ posts. What will I share today?

My biggest problems when working on a 3d model

The textures…the god damned textures. Especially when mixed with uv mapping.

I’m already crappy enough at uv mapping, can’t seem to understand the basic concept behind the ‘no stretching’ rule, then comes the ‘Crap, need to make a texture for this UV template’, that is when I really start thinking about dropping a project. Yeah…you read correctly, I contemplate dropping a project because I can’t make textures.

That honestly is the worst part of being a crazy indie game dev, I work alone – end of discussion -, so if I don’t know how to do something I either learn how to do it or I just say ‘Fuck it.’ and forget about it.

I learned 3D modelling because of that – no matter how crappy my ability is -, then programming, now looking at how to make music and sound effects. But the damned textures always get the better of me, I read tutorials about textures, books, video tutorials, anything I get my hands on. Final result: Crappy looking, flat textures.

It really makes me frustrated, because no matter how much I study about them and try to make textures I see no progress towards a ‘good’ or even ‘average’ texture. Using 3D modelling as an example – while I’m still a very crappy modeller – every time I start a new model I feel it’s easier and that at least the way I work is getting better – the same can’t be said about the end result – but that doesn’t happen with textures, no matter if I use photographic reference or not, textures end up being crappy. :-S

Then I mix crappy textures with ‘not even noobs do it like that’ UV maps, which results in texture stretching beyond what people thought as humanly possible.

I guess my next project will be all black and white…

It’s ‘That time’ again…

It was taking a while…but ‘that time’ is back again.

What is ‘that time’?

Simple: is that couple of days – normally after 1 month of starting a new project – where I think: ‘Is this really a good idea? Is it worth all the work and learning and all that shit? If I finish it will people like the game?’

Today started ‘that time’ for “The Sniper Simulator Part1, no Part2 planned”. And my lack of dedication and work on the project – and ‘Real Life’™ problems – are making me wonder if I will ever finish it…

And I should really give a name to the game, can’t stand working on something that does not have a name.

Fun fact: I don’t like Chuck Norris – well, don’t like his films or any other thing where he’s an actor, nothing against him personally :-P -, I only use him for his meme value.

Another fun fact: I had no idea Chuck Norris was 70 years old, knowing that, he got closer to Sean Connery on my ‘How I want to look when I get old’ list.
