Reading H.P. Lovecraft works, Part 1
First an ‘unofficial’ thanks to feedbooks.com , thanks to that site I found most if not all the works by H.P Lovecraft and just printed them, the poor guy wouldn’t get any money if I bought them anyway.
“The Call of Cthulhu”, “Dagon” and “Herbert West: Reanimator” have been read.
TCoC was nice, as an horror story. (I’m not much of a literary analyst, as you can see)
HW:R was great, as dark humour. West and his poor unnamed assistant always end up in the always ‘special’ “Oh…fuck…” situation, their first experiment conclusion, described by me:
“Meh, didn’t work…” /both go to another place in the house/
/minutes later/
*hellish sound*
*two guys running out of the windows*
I won’t even talk about “Dagon”, not that it was bad, just that I won’t talk about the really short stories.
So, those were worth the paper and ink that I spent.
Next I’ll probably read all of the really short stories (under 10 pages).
Putting all my projects to sleep, why?
…why?
First, probably because I have some mood changes…pretty much every single day. So the project that was “fucking great” and “easy to accomplish” on one day, a few days later becomes the project that “is boring”, “too fucking complex” and “needs more planning than I like”.
In reality, that is not much of a mood change, it’s just that when I first get an idea I get ‘drunk’ on it, everything is wonderful, then a few days/weeks later I just look at it again, with my usual ‘cold’/not biased look and all hell breaks loose, that ‘wonderful feature’ becomes ‘a fucking nightmare to implement’, the base idea goes from ‘great’ to ‘needs some tweaks…lots of tweaks…better rewrite the whole thing’.
How random am I allowed to be on this site?
As I said on an earlier post, sometimes I just love to be overly dramatic…
I also love to type on a ‘normal’ keyboard, been using one of these “Made in china” rubber keyboards for a few months now, due to killing 2 normal ones in less than 3 months by spilling drinks over them. 2 days ago I remembered I still had 1 or 2 functioning keyboards around, plugged in my Logitech keyboard and…ahhhh…much better, except for the annoying noise of the keys – yes, it annoys me, mostly after 2 am, I’m fine with the noise during the day – anyway the rubber keyboard will comeback, will try to wash it, the poor thing is getting a bit dirty. Also my typo ratio dropped immediately after the change, the damned rubber keys were awful if you wanted to have some ‘precision’ while typing.
I’m bored
That is all…
Not really.
I’ve been bored for the last weeks/months, so I decided to buy some fishing equipment and go fishing one of these days (for a little change from the usual boredom), bought it. Then yesterday my car broke down, now my only mean of transport is walking. Happiness, never ending happiness…
I wonder how long it takes to walk ~15km so I can go to the fishing spot I wanted to go to…
Again, because I can.
Lately, I’ve been in the mood to read manga and watch anime.
So I chose 1 manga and 1 anime that sounded good and watched/read.
And damn, did I make good choices…
The manga was “20th Century Boys” and “21st Century Boys”, one warning…the ending sucks and you end up never clearly understanding what led to the whole thing.
The anime was “Monster”, pretty nice again a very…’meh’ ending. Got a bit confused about some stuff, but there’s one thing on that anime that I’m sure of: Communism is evil.
So if you have a few hours/days to waste, I would recommend you to try one of those two.
That makes me remember that I have “Death Note” – the anime – on ‘hold’ for…around 3 years.
A New Idea
Yep, I had an idea for another project.
Now the surprising fact is…it wasn’t a game.
It began when I thought about making a blog just to whine – instead of whining in here – then I suddenly had the idea of writing a storyline that would be shown to the reader as blog posts. Honestly, the less I write about it the bigger the chance of it having success is.
So this is a meaningless post, right? Since I won’t share more details about such project…
No, this is – again – one of those ‘I share random stuff’ posts. What will I share today?
Happy Happy Joy Joy
After 3 free hosts and a paid host (all in≈1 week) all my websites are back to a VPS, no more shared hosts for me, at least not for now.
Of course I cannot write the words “Happy Happy Joy Joy” without leaving a video related to it (for those who didn’t get it, it was a reference to Ren & Stimpy)
My biggest problems when working on a 3d model
The textures…the god damned textures. Especially when mixed with uv mapping.
I’m already crappy enough at uv mapping, can’t seem to understand the basic concept behind the ‘no stretching’ rule, then comes the ‘Crap, need to make a texture for this UV template’, that is when I really start thinking about dropping a project. Yeah…you read correctly, I contemplate dropping a project because I can’t make textures.
That honestly is the worst part of being a crazy indie game dev, I work alone – end of discussion -, so if I don’t know how to do something I either learn how to do it or I just say ‘Fuck it.’ and forget about it.
I learned 3D modelling because of that – no matter how crappy my ability is -, then programming, now looking at how to make music and sound effects. But the damned textures always get the better of me, I read tutorials about textures, books, video tutorials, anything I get my hands on. Final result: Crappy looking, flat textures.
It really makes me frustrated, because no matter how much I study about them and try to make textures I see no progress towards a ‘good’ or even ‘average’ texture. Using 3D modelling as an example – while I’m still a very crappy modeller – every time I start a new model I feel it’s easier and that at least the way I work is getting better – the same can’t be said about the end result – but that doesn’t happen with textures, no matter if I use photographic reference or not, textures end up being crappy.
Then I mix crappy textures with ‘not even noobs do it like that’ UV maps, which results in texture stretching beyond what people thought as humanly possible.
I guess my next project will be all black and white…
This is my blog, my blog is amazing. Give it a lick…
And I have a fucking annoying pain on my left shoulder…even more annoying because I am left handed…using the mouse with the right hand, how can people do that?
Today on my mind:
Would I fail the Turing test? (ie. would I be classified as a machine and not human)
C#, what do I think I know but actually don’t know?
Unity3D, where’s the feature delta?
Money, why can’t money be free?
Because I can…
Music…
Days listening to Silent Hill OSTs: over 20 (at least 1 hour per day)
Why is this relevant? No idea, but I still post, because I can.
I’m pretty sure I’m turning insane at any second now…
