Not so high value anymore, bitches?
So, today, 15/Apr/2014, just jestingly I went to dot.tk and tried to re-register my old domain “vortex69.tk” and…
I found I could register it, for free…pretty much exactly one month after I stopped using them when my domain was taken from me without warning because it contained words deemed to be “high value” and so I should pay for the privilege (click to read about the end of my use of dot.tk, which I had used for 3 years)
So, now I could register it…
The strange world of freewebhosting.
It’s an intriguing ‘industry’ when you start looking at it.
And I don’t mean on the “no such thing as free lunch” (even then, with current CPU power and cheap-ish RAM and HDD space, you can host thousands of “1GB free” web hosting accounts in a single server without much problem and at a pretty low cost), I mean of the literally hundreds of ‘companies’ offering free web hosting, a good bunch of them are just one company (heck, we can probably trace 70% of them to just 5 or 6 companies).
Obviously they offer the same exact pack, under different names, on the same exact servers, the really funny thing is: sometimes they get wildly different reviews.
And this post is not about any of that. This is about my search for the “perfect free web host”.

Mysteries of the universe
One of those mysteries is how the heck does my current host (a free host, doesn’t matter for now, I’ll praise them if things keep going OK) measure CPU usage.
Because in cPanel the CPU usage meter is like this:
CPU Usage 0 bytes / 100 MB
CPU usage measured in MB, now there’s something new.
And their bandwidth meter doesn’t work.
Also kind of funny was a free host that I used before that allowed 2 add-on domains, but only one sub domain. (as you may, or may not know cPanel uses one sub domain per add-domain and AFAIK there’s no way to circumvent it)
Wow, long time since I last read manga.
(Hell yeah wordpress, first time ever that I use quick draft and it doesn’t fucking save so I had to re-write this post, fucking love ya! )
Yeah, last time I remember reading manga was probably somewhere last year (2013), last time I made a post about it was in 2011. (considering I wrote nothing in 2013 and stopped almost in the middle of 2012, it’s not really that much time)
So, it was time to read some manga and make another post, because…stuff. (because I feel like writing damn it!)
Since zombies are so en vogue, I started reading “I am a hero” , pity it is still ongoing since as I said before I like to read manga start to finish in one go. (well, not necessarily in one go, I normally sleep eat and all that, I just don’t like to break the pace of reading more than necessary)

Sometimes (very rarely) there’s something in the video game world that makes me laugh.
I didn’t laugh at Bus Simulator (which I played), or Farming Simulator (which I also played, 2011 and 2013) or Euro Truck Simulator 2 (I’ve been playing truck simulators since…well, since Hard Truck 2)
But Goat Simulator made me laugh, but not because I find it ridiculous. (I’m 27, my first games were on a NES, games with far-fetched base ideas are what gaming was all about before 2000)
So…
After not posting anything in 2013 (and a good part of 2012), here I am posting a bunch of stuff suddenly.
Truth is, 2013 was probably (as far as hobby stuff) the worst year ever.
In a list:
- I didn’t write anything in this blog.
- Lack of updates completely fucked my “Adults only” website, had to close it as I had no money to renew hosting and domain. Talking about that, did I ever disclose what kind of website it was? Try to guess, I like anime and spent some time on my teen years playing eroge (some 12-14 years ago). Yeah, it was an hentai website, since the visitors were 80%+ Japanese I guess it had good content for the niche.
- As mentioned before, no shitty short films. Hence, no video editing, nor playing around with VFX or SFX. No writing scripts either.
- No game development stuff, includes:
- No 3D modelling of anything
- No playing around with music software
- No programming in whatever language
- No writing scripts (kinda overlaps with scripts for the shitty short films, no?)
It’s almost as if I holed up in my room and didn’t do anything for an entire year. To be honest, that’s not completely wrong.

Interesting
So, as I said sometime ago (somewhere in 2012), I like to make shitty 0€ budget short films on my free time.
Mostly we base the idea on some well known film and 0 budget the shit out of it.
That activity has been pretty much dead for a while
But a week ago, I started having ideas for a short based on “The Thing” (1982), except 0 budgeted to death and with only one actor.
So for the intro, I grab Blender and start to mock-up a little spaceship (you know, like in “The Thing”).
Little big problem, in the year that I spent not using blender (or any other 3D package) I pretty much forgot everything (as little as it was) that I knew about 3D modelling.
Ain’t that great?

dot.tk *bleep* you
So, after using them for a little over three years, if I’m not wrong, for a domain that pretty much only gets hits from the uptime monitoring services (true story, brah), alas the domain just suddenly disappears from the control panel at dot.tk and when I try to re-register it I get a message that vortex69.tk is a “special domain” or whatever the hell, as it contains “words that were identified as having a great value”, monetary value that is, from a site that gets 1 hit every month (if I exclude the uptime thingies).
