List of free software/services/stuff I find useful.

statcounter.com

Not much to say about it, pretty nice visitor counter, free.

First found it when looking for a counter for my porn site (true story) I was using Extreme Tracking, which is also nice, data wise maybe better than statcounter, except the whole counter was public, so I could even find it on google. So I needed something a bit more private and found statcounter, currently on use on all my websites.

Inkscape

First, I used CorelDRAW – at the vocational school where I studied multimedia, more correctly ‘Information Technologies and Multimedia Communication’ (crappy translation), in Portuguese ‘Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação Multimédia’ – then I used Adobe Illustrator, then I got tired of it and looked for a cheap, lightweight alternative.

Inkscape…cheap enough (free), pretty lightweight and enough features for most small jobs.

Unity3D

As I said, this section will have links to and opinions about some freeware programs I use.

First one is Unity3D, love it and at the same time hate it with a passion. Obviously I’ve only used the free (old Indie) version of it. Currently using it for 2 projects, it’s is pretty lightweight but it’s easy to see why, graphics are not ‘next-gen’;

I hate that expression ‘next-gen’ wtf does that mean?

What was ‘next-gen’ 3 years ago is now the ‘Low’ setting of a video game…oh, wait…console people don’t have graphic options, so they will never know the difference between ‘Lowest’ and ‘Highest’ or even ‘Custom’ on a game, it’s stuck on ‘Low’. (Not much of a console fan-boy, am I?).

Back on track, at least for now it is not to be compared with UDK, at least on graphics.

But on a positive side it’s pretty easy to use, the scripting languages (UnityScript and C#) are relatively easy to learn and use. And Unity 3.0 looks promising, with Beäst and Umbra (Light mapping and object occlusion, respectively).
