I’m still around
I haven’t posted anything in months.
And no one cares.
I guess I’m too self-centred to not have a site/blog, yet not self-centred enough to post every little bit of crap that passes my mind.
So, I guess I’ll give a bit of an update and a small insight into my personal life.
Recently I learned…
…that 7-zip has some trouble with .tar.gz files.
As I posted earlier I moved web hosting and since it was a sudden unexpected move the most recent backup was a few days old, but it’s not like I post much so it was probably fine.
As every time I need a backup, I was thankful I do automatic backups hosted offsite (two times a week, to Dropbox in this case)
So I grabbed the most recent backup, which by now was one week old and extracted it.
Absent mindedly uploaded the files by ftp while I created the mysql databases and users, when the upload finished I went to the site URL and…nothing worked.
After a short downtime, the site is back
No one missed it, except for me.
And that’s just fine.
When you get your hosting, make sure it’s not managed by people who already have a questionable history in the world of webhosting.
Suddenly both the shared hosting and my VPS were offline.
Even the VPS control panel was down, seemed like all the company’s servers went dark suddenly.
And after two days they weren’t back on, after some googling I found why.
New hard disk
Finally I can restart my collection of midget erotic films from the 1930s or whatever it was that I had in that drive.
Ended up buying a used 500GB drive, finances are a bit tight to buy anything more expensive right now.
Arrived in a day, well packaged, everyone knows how much of a danger the postal services are to hard drives.
So I put it in the external case where I took the dead disk from.
Oh, nice…lack of luck strikes again!
Your motherboard blew?
You had to spend money out of your meagre savings to buy a used one?
Oh, poor you…but you better stop feeling sorry for yourself because, well, now is the right time for your “archive” external hard drive to start dying.
Oh yeah!
This is my life baby!
Constant shit after shit. Every day is an adventure.
While my motherboard was blown
So, as I mentioned here , my motherboard blew up in January and in the meantime I’ve been using an old laptop that I got free off a friend a couple of years ago.
Hey, it was either going to some musty drawer or straight to the dumpster and I like typing on laptops, so…I feel like I did the right thing.
As I said the thing is about 10 years old. And the battery lasts about 10 minutes.
Breaking the silence.
Yeah, you know, luck and all that.
My main computer motherboard blew…again.
Thing died in January and I’ve been using a 10 year old laptop since. (with a Pentium T2080, I had to upgrade it, will post something about that probably)
Retro style, part 7 – retro gaming
Post originally meant to be posted in December of 2017, but I hadn’t finished writing it. It’s finally published, didn’t take long, did it? Moving on…
Oh god! Didn’t it end in the unnumbered post (#6) after Retro style, part 5?
Well, it did, but I decided to milk the cow a little bit more.
Toward the end of my 3 months without a decent computer, I started getting tired of listening to audio books. (in fact, I haven’t listened to another one since)
So I had to look for alternative entertainment. All I could do on my 2nd PC was listen to audio files (music/audio-books) and read text (plain text).

(more…)Lazarus IDE
Have you ever used Pascal? (I have)
Do you wish it could make modern GUI programs? (I do)
Are you too poor for whatever Delphi is called now? (I am)
Do you like to make software that doesn’t need a framework (Java, .NET) to run? (I do)
Worry not, a bunch of crazy open source guys have you covered:

And again, almost a year of no posts.
Once again I spent months and months without making a single post.
Last time I posted I had recently moved the site to a non free webhost (finally), actually a VPS. By now it’s two weeks until the yearly renewal of the thing.
I did something like that back in 2012-2013 (almost a year and half without posts) and I can’t even remember why I did it back then.
But this time it was because I started writing rants by hand, on notebooks.
And most of them weren’t really suited to post on my blog/site/whatever this is.
Out of some 300 A5 pages, not a single rant was useful for the site.
And guess what!
I moved hosting again.
Might just be temporary, but I decided it was a waste to have a VPS just to serve a dozen hits a month, so I just got a really budget shared hosting with the same company I have the VPS.
I’ll still keep the VPS as it isn’t half bad for the price (1 core@1.6Ghz, 1GB RAM, 20GB hdd for less than USD$15 a year) and probably just install a desktop distro of linux.
I may or may not start posting more often on the site, probably some reviews or something (I said the same thing back in 2014 and 2017)
Time will tell.
And I still haven’t finished my rant about Tokyo Magnitude 8.0.
I’ll never finish it, it has been sitting for 3 years on my drafts folder (2 years originally and then 1 year after my 2017 rewriting of part of it)
See you next post!
