Stuff Review #1: EKA Swede 38

And finally, the first review of something, only some 6 years late.
Not really a review, more of a rant in my usual noncommittal, meandering style.

First victim: EKA Swede 38.
I believe they are no longer produced.

I’ll start with a knife review because I felt like it. Next time I’ll probably review a pen or something.

I’m not going to post photos of my own EKA because…it’s well used, all scratched and dirty.

I’ve had this knife for about 8 years now. Rarely use it.
Got it in a trade with a friend of mine, can’t remember what I traded, the knife was already decently used.
Brand new they seem to cost (or have costed, as they seem to be out of production) around 25-30€.

I must admit I have a love-hate relationship with it.

At first sight it’s a nice EDC knife with a classic design, not very aggressive looking, easy on the eyes.
Reasonably thick (2.8mm) and long blade (75mm, some say 80mm, but I only count the cutting edge). Decent steel, Sandvik 12C27, same stainless as the awesome Mora Companion.

I’m a team stainless steel guy since I live near the ocean and most of my outdoorsing is near salt water, I’m also way too lazy to keep the blade completely dry considering the humidity in the air.
Steel preferences quip finished, moving on.

It’s also a reasonably lightweight pocket knife weighing less than 80 grams.

Another thing I like is that it is very easy to take apart and maintain. Remove two screws and it’s done. Only difficulty in putting it all back together is the spring bar.

Other than a lack of a lock and clip, why would I hate it in any way?

Well…

Pros Cons
  • Design
  • Blade thickness
  • Decent steel
  • Not too heavy
  • No clip
  • No lock

So, lots of good points.
The lack of a lock is not terrible since the spring bar is pretty strong. And the clip would destroy the classic sleek design.
What is it that makes me hate it?

Gnomes.
At least I guess that must be it.
Frigging gnomes grab the knife when I’m not looking and constantly fuck the edge.
I sharpen it, put it back in the drawer and next time I use it I can see light shining off the edge.

Thought that maybe the design was crap and when closing the blade hit the spring bar or something, nope, not as far as I can tell.
It’s worse at holding an edge than my Victorinox.

The constantly disappearing edge is a good candidate for an X-File.

Anyway, even with the edge problem I’ll give it…

3.5 retarded stars out of 5.
