Retro style, part 3 – Linux command line goodness

So, here’s the next instalment of the boring, never ending saga.

This one should be short, it’s mostly an update on stuff.

560 words

So, my command line saga continues (and will not stop for at least another week or two).

Things I found:

—————– emacs ———
emacs is actually quite usable and has menus, the possibility for “Enriched Text” makes .txt documents slightly less dull.
It also can count words in a selected piece of text. (which is great as I have different rants in one single txt file)

So yeah, it’s my text editor on this “80s nerd LARPing”.

I still prefer WordGrinder to write longer stuff, mostly because displaying the paragraph numbers on the side makes me feel it’s the correct tool. (and the fact it uses the typical windows keys as shortcuts, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, etc.)

And yes, I’m aware emacs is more than a simple text editor, but that’s what I’m using it for.

Small aside, it’s kinda fun (in a masochist way) to jump back to emacs or wordgrinder after browsing a bit with elinks. (hint: elinks scroll key is delete)

—————– mc ———
vifm is not the only “graphical” file explorer, another example is “mc” (Midnight commander) although this second one doesn’t offer a “Recycle bin” style deletion option (i.e. where the files are just moved to a hidden folder when deleted until you give the command to empty it).
I love that assurance that my collection of…something that was gathered along the years won’t be deleted by mistake, due to my goofy fingers pressing the wrong key(s) never to recover those files again. (it’s actually good that vifm has a recycle bin, “dd”, that is pressing the d key twice, is a shortcut to delete and sometimes my fingers twitch and…I nearly deleted my collection of…everything as I gather everything in a certain folder under /home/ which happened to be highlighted at the wrong moment)

—————– mocp ———
As for audio players, I settled for cmus but tried “mocp” (Music on Console) too, the lack of a queue with a visible list put me off.
I hate music programs that store the queue in the ether.
Not being able to put the same file multiple times in the queue was also crappy.
Still, I use both of them as neither is perfect and each likes to crash on some files.
mocp seems to do video files with no problem, yet baulks at fucked up mp3s (you know those that play fine but give trouble on seeking).
cmus seems to do the opposite.

(as a small apart, listening to films is kinda bizarre unless you choose the right one, “Fight Club” for example works great in my opinion, so I guess any narration heavy film would work)

—————– sc-im ———
And as spreadsheet thingy I now use sc-im instead of sc.
It has colours! (yes, that’s sadly the only discernable reason for me to use sc-im)
Pity it’s one of those “you have to compile it” Linux programs, I hate having to dig around for dependencies.

I guess that is all for programs.

And I guess this is already long enough to warrant part 4, so much for being short. (I actually miskeyed “4” twice and did 45 and 54, perhaps it’s a sarcastic hint by some higher power that there are enough “Retro style, part X” posts already; perhaps it’s just a subconscious desire of mine to one day stretch a saga of posts to the dozens)

Anyway, see you next post.
