Yandere (the game)

Yandere (18+ only)

Or: Why you should assess the mental health of your sexual conquests beforehand.

First things first, I have nothing against games with crazy chicks trying to kill the protagonist if he deserves it. (although I feel there’s a lack of games with protagonists killing his love interests if they deserve) Anyway, “Nice boat” and all that (hint: School Days), but I felt this game just went way overboard with his stupidity.
But hey, the game title is “Yandere” I could expect nothing other than a game where the protagonist would be hunted down by various mentally deranged chicks for whatever reason. It’s not my favourite genre, but I’m playing out of boredom and sense of discovery.

As usual, might contain spoilers and/or images not appropriate to kids. (no, not as many images as Paca Plus , but way more NSFW, WAY MORE NSFW)

The main char is Chad Thundercock, well he isn’t, but going by the rest of the game, he could thank the gods for that, as all his interests are completely crazy. (he’s named Subaru if you’re wondering) He has a childhood friend (Saki) who is crazy…for him and acts as a cock block. Until he has sex with her. (Bam, one of the first scenes of the game.)

I couldn’t help but spend a part of the game giving some tips and tricks to the protagonist, like:

When you notice one of your sexual conquests got past your supposedly locked door while you were asleep, it’s a good time to go check the door and change the locks.
When it happens again and again to the point that you come home and find one of them (Maika) naked, blindfolded and bound waiting for you in your room, it’s time to move.

Yet the protagonist did none of that. In fact when he finds the naked and bound chick, he finds it strange at first but then proceeds as if everything was OK, what did you expect? He was getting horny and she was wet, who could say no?! there was no other choice. And then, he forgets to even ask her how the hell she got in his house and bound and gagged herself.

Gotta love a straight thinking, easy to relate with protagonist! Oh, wait, wrong game.

I must be honest, in this first play-through I’m actually trying to see how fast I can get the protagonist killed, so bear in mind that I might be describing the worst path in the game.

You see my tips to the protagonist up there?

It gets worse.

After the third love interest, Ms.Sluttyteacher (Yuumi), appears ringing his doorbell and banging at the door at midnight looking deranged, our hero (?) decides to lock the chain lock. (well, my opinion about the guy might slowly get better with game progress, or not)

“Hai thar, just your friendly teacher coming for a visit at midnight.”

By the next morning he forgot what had happened, but was pretty sure he locked the chain lock, strangely there stood Ms. childhoodfriendcockblock (Saki) in the middle of his living room. Again, he forgets to ask how the hell did she bypass the chain lock. (yeah, my opinion on him will remain pretty close to the lowest possible)

This post might look like I’m criticizing the game and I am but…I knew well enough what I was getting into (low/no-budget short game) and so far it’s delivering, the tense parts manage to be tense well enough, the gore is kinda nice. Is it the greatest thing ever? Nah, but it’s decent.
Art wise, it’s not that good, the backgrounds are pretty generic and lack detail, the char art on the other hand isn’t all that terrible, the music is ‘cheap’ but works, another big let down is voice, there’s pretty much one line per girl and that’s it.
The game is short, too short for any yandere ‘purist’ who wants the dere part of it, I was in it for the gore.
The characters are all straight out of some mental asylum, even the protagonist who has no qualms about cheating, manipulating, public sex and a few others.
And at US$18 for a seven year old game, I can’t really recommend buying it, especially if you like games with a solid story, this game is just an excuse to make some of the most deranged yanderes go and kill some virtual guy. If it was way cheaper I would say it would be worth the money if you like some gore. 5/10, might be worth playing if gore is your kind of thing or if you don’t really care, if you want a deep story and character development, look elsewhere.
Despite all the flaws, the somewhat over the top gore scenes (well, of a kind of gore that is somewhat plausible) made me kinda like it. (now someone will think I’m a bit of a loony tuzki_kill )

So, that’s all for now.

And two in her nipples. It’s the stuff of nightmares…

See, two in the nipples, told you. It’s officially the first 2D game to make me slightly uncomfortable. Bravo!

(I’m going to spoil a couple of endings, if you intend to play this game, stop now, go play and come back later, because the endings are the only thing that is worth anything in this game)

BTW, seems like I got Maika’s Worst Ending.

Spoiler
And the protagonist didn’t die. (but I’m sure he’ll go to jail, after all he had just ass fucked a chick who had safety pins in three erogenous points (2 nipples and clitoris, might just count as two erogenous points, dunno), a sewn vulva and a broken heart…wait, did I say heart, I meant neck, a broken neck. :-bd

The “good” endings don’t seem to be much better, got Saki’s good ending on the second play-through and the protagonist ends up

Spoiler
sitting in a chair, with his arms behind his back, nailed to the back of the chair while Saki “services” him.

The stuff nightmares are made of indeed. :-|

The game manages to make me replay just to see what other depraved, crazy endings it has. Still not worth US$18 (if it was US$5, maybe…)

If you’re curious enough and have way too much time in your hands, read what the guy who fan-translated the game to english has to say about it. He has some good points.
