Love when this kind of situations occur, simply by chance.
After a ~7 hour downtime on both of my VPSes (seems like both nodes were down), I was just ready to start filling a support ticket, when I thought: “Well, let me check using downforeveryoneorjustme” and as I did, my second VPS was reported as up, “Wait, what?” there I go, pointing my browser to **.**.**.222 and…a directory listing page for lighttpd, which meant it was up. “Hey, what about my main VPS?” and a couple of seconds later **.**.**.158 was up and running.
The paranoid side of me is asking how they can know if I’m filling the support ticket or not…
Talking about the VPSes, need to run yum update on the main one. That and grab the latest backups, just in case…
And just noticed that OVH setup fees are back to being free, nice. (dunno how long this has been like that, just happened to read about it a few minutes ago) I say “nice” because I was a quite happy customer of OVH 1-2 years ago, when I had a dedicated server with them for the course of 1 year, left them on June 2010.
Sure, speeds were not awesome outside Europe, although for me (Europe) they reached 30Mbps, which was my max and the visitors of the download website I hosted there never complained (it was 60-70% Japanese traffic); customer service was pretty basic but their control panel was simply wonderful features wise, you could do pretty much anything from it, except replace hardware, obviously. And the uptime…for the whole year I would guess I had no more than 10 hours of downtime that were not my own fault.
Still remember the server specs of the second one, it was one of the C-05G from their Kimsufi line (grabbed it as soon as the C-05G came out, then cancelled the other server I had there): Intel Core2Duo E2180, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, at least the HDD was completely new, every now and then I would look at the “power on hours” going up and up using S.M.A.R.T., in fact I had a Webmin addon that would make pretty pretty graphics with all that stuff, CPU and HDD ºC, Network speed, some S.M.A.R.T. data, HDD space used/free and some other crap.
Damn, I miss those days, being fucking poor sucks, worse, being fucking poor AND a computer geek sucks. For the last year and half I’ve been using shitty VPSes, even worse shared webspace and even free webspace.
