This year on ‘Colina Silenciosa’

As I already said this project started on the first days of February, 2010. What progress do we have until now?

NONE.

At least nothing noteworthy. Why? Organization…lack of.

Although I won’t hide that for me this project is, first and foremost, a learning project. I doubt that the final result will be worth distributing, but I will do it anyway.

Not only it is one of my dreams — releasing a video game, now you know I’m a decent geek — it’s also one of my favourite kind of game, survival horror.

So where does the learning come in? While I know lots of theory and watch lots of video tutorials, read books, etc. I rarely put knowledge into use, e.g. I started playing around with 3D modelling around 3 or 4 years ago — it was not the first try, but the first ‘serious’ try — a bit later I had 3D at school and if I don’t count school related models, in those 4-5 years I made 3 or 4 models, none of them was ever finished. So you can see I have, pretty much, no practice at 3D modelling, only theory. *end of e.g.*

So this project, with at least 100 different 3D models to make — ranging from a tin can to a 3 legged monster — is good to get practice, really good.

Also, this is not only learning/’exercising’ 3D modelling, if you read some more of my rants about this project you probably came to the conclusion that I’m the jack of all trades. So..

This is also practise in game design — about which I’ve read an unreasonably high amount of books/texts/articles –, sound design — or whatever it is that the process of ‘designing’ sounds and musics is called –, programming — meh, Unity scripts in C# count as programming — and pretty much everything else that needs to be done. But about these I won’t write in more detail.

That’s all very nice, but what am I planning to accomplish on this project this year?

Not much, planning to at least finish the first 30 minutes of gameplay, so we can release an half-assed demo. So we can say — and prove — that we did something.

Obviously, I would love to finish the entire game in 2011, but I guess that’s too much to realistically ask for, at least if we keep this pace. So my best case scenario is finishing all of the 3d modelling related with the map on 2011.
