Getting used to blender, part 9854

Well, I guess I should post something, unfortunately it’s nothing interesting, but that’s an already known fact.

So in the last 6 months — don’t know if I’m right, but it’s around that amount of time — I’ve been trying to get used to blender, since I was used to 3ds max — which was what I learned at school — and my 3ds max ‘student version’ *cough, yarr matey!* can’t be used commercially and I can never decide if my projects are or are not commercial.

How was the progress until now?

Well, every now and then I have to start 3ds max and just stand there for hours, staring at the viewport, the good looking, comfortable and familiar 3ds max viewport. Ok, I’m exaggerating, but every month or so I go back to 3ds max and play around with it. But overall blender isn’t that bad, it’s just that I feel that a few things in it lack logic or at least the kind of logic I’m familiar with.

Even simple things, for example copying a keyframe — which is pretty useful for animations that end at the same spot they started — I spent a bit clicking, right clicking, middle clicking, etc on the timeline, no “Copy keyframe” option, later I found that — well, I might be wrong — I had to go to the graph editor to copy and paste keyframes. Just to compare, do you know how many times I used 3ds max curve editor? Pretty close to 0, the animations I did/do don’t really need much tampering with. Now I have to use blenders ‘curve editor’ everytime I need to copy a keyframe. There are more…which I can’t recall right now.

Then there’s something positive that I only found out…a week ago?!

The screen layouts. After a few minutes I had my ’24/7′ layout — pretty much the normal layout using the quad view — and my ‘UVWs’ layout — which looks like the already included ‘UV Editing’, except it’s divided horizontally — and that’s pretty much all the positives I found.

Then I found a ‘I wish I knew that X days ago’, the ‘Solidify’ modifier is pretty much ‘Shell’ from 3ds max, which I loved since modelling simple buildings and such was really easy thanks to it. But I only found about Solidify — solidify? what the heck of a name… — 3 days ago, after I completed another building model for my current project, which WAS pretty much just 4 walls and a roof, that thing would have been made in 10 less minutes, had I known about solidify.

Tired of typing, specially because I have another post to post right after this one. Be right back.   tuzki_roll
