Unity 3 is out.

For now there’s no free version, only the Pro trial. Scrap that, there’s an option to activate free

Which I was already using for a couple of days, in a fast and easy explanation: Google is a good friend of mine.

In a bit longer explanation, google indexed a download page for the f1 version (RC1, if I’m not wrong) and you could register it as trial. And Unitys update check feature took care of keeping me up to date.

Now, stuff…(Consider I’m using the pro features and I’m a noob, so I’ll only talk about graphic stuff)

Lightmapping is nice, finally got the map of Colina Silenciosa to look dark, as it should be.

The dynamic shadows work pretty well, but there’s something on them that strikes me as odd…

The tree making thingie is confusing, very confusing. Consider that I can use UDKs Speedtree without any problem and make reasonably good looking trees. Even more amazing, I can use tree[d] – in which I believe Unity tree thingie is based – and make good looking trees.

And now the object lists are actually a little window with all the textures/models with thumbnails. Amazing…oh, wait, this has been standard for at least 10 years (at least the textures, UnrealEd had it back when I tried to learn how to make a map for UT, if I’m not mistaken)

Well, that’s as far as I got. Lazy + having fun trying to finally learn how to make textures (as in start from a photo reference and manipulate it to make it look good).

Also wasting hours at Polycount and Gameartisans forums looking at the WIP threads, thanks to that I fell in love with a train model by GoK, mostly due to the texturing, it has that ‘Silent Hillish’ look that I love so much (Check it out: http://voodoocanonball.blogspot.com/2010/08/new-train-model.html ).
