As the title says.
We all have guilty pleasures, in this post I’ll reveal a couple of my youtube guilty pleasures.
Not that anyone cares, but part of the fun is to share, who knows if someone will end up liking the same stuff.
And I felt like writing a bit. (as the tags indicate)
750 words
So, overall my youtube subscription list is mostly bushcraft/camping/”prepper” channels (I guess those constitute a guilty pleasure by themselves)
Within the bushcraft/camping channels, a special guilty pleasure of mine are the ones from japanese campers (I’m a weeaboo, so nothing unexpected there)
It’s so much fun to watch them carry half their house on their back every time they go out.
I mean…come on, they take tiny folding tables just to go for a walk and a brew. (and I mean tiny, e.g. one of the first ones I saw that I recall was this SOTO ST-630 , it’s awesome and ridiculous in equal amounts; another in vogue model seems to be something of this kind , somehow I couldn’t find that kind of table in ebay…I admit, I’m curious to try one of those things in person to see if they improve the experience)
It’s especially fun to see how much the guys with a motorbike load the poor thing.
Example? (a decent one, look at all the cases and strapped junk in the first 90 seconds):
And the guys with cars…god, the guys with cars.

Image still taken from a video by 尾上祐一郎
Yes, that is for an overnighter.
No, they aren’t setting up camp for 2 weeks.
And I thought I took too much stuff when I took a USB powerbank, a tablet to watch a film or two at night and the camera for some photos and video.
Look at that image and let it sink in…
It’s only a one nighter.
That tent looks more comfy than most japanese bedrooms I’ve seen.
The dude has a kotatsu right there in the middle of the tent.
Another peculiarity of japanese campers/bushcrafters is food.
Every video has food.
If we go by the videos all their outings are:
- Drive to the place (normally omitted from the video, but makes a nice, comfy filler otherwise)
- Get gear out of the car.
- Set up shop nearby.
- Food. (the “after a drive quick snack”)
- A bit of a walk around (most times omitted from the video)
- Food. (dinner, normally by means of real time exhibition of the cooking process on the video)
- Sleep.
- Food. (in the morning)
- Pack gear
- Drive out
Did I make mention of how much of a bunch of gear whores they (mostly) are, despite their hardly challenging outings?
I mean, I’m hardly one to talk about challenging outings, I mostly do walks for some hours in the afternoon.
But I do these walks with a 15L daypack that cost the grand sum of 8€ (and has been my de facto daypack for at least 6 years, great RoI)
And the one nighters I’ve done I used a 35L backpack that cost me…8€ (there’s something magical about that amount, it’s like cheapskate’s catnip, for me at least)
Well, since I’m running out of ideas on what to write about this subject, I’ll just leave a couple of links for japanese camping/outdoor channels that I subscribe to on youtube.
Camping Laboratory – One of the first I found and subscribed to, thanks to some thread in 4chan’s /out/. I find his “Abandoned road Cafe” series kinda interesting, because I also enjoy visiting abandoned places, but I never thought about having a snack and coffee while there.
If you’re into watching videos for the scenery, his “Trekking Mt.Hiko” 4 parter is kinda nice, as is the 6 parter “Trekking Mt.Kuju”.
rock PLUS – Dunno why, but I like his videos, just an average Joe going camping and having fun outdoors.
The wood stove he made at work can only be described as scary, especially if you think about carrying it on your back. On the other hand the knives he made seem pretty usable.
MrArea929 – This was the first japanese camping/outdoor channel that I subscribed to, hasn’t uploaded any videos for 4 months now, either got bored with it or life got in the way.
SYU SHIRAKAWA – subscribed to this one only recently, some comfy videos camping in the snow.
And a mention to winpy-jijii for all of his excellent DIY little gadgets. (and above average cinematography)
This is all, see you next rant.
